Chess Club Webpage
Description: The after school lessons are taught by a professional chess coach in a small group setting with kids of similar skill level (USCF ranking) once a week. We are able to offer two afternoon class everyday of the week. This allows us to provide: Smaller groups of kids in each club meeting time; A tighter defined level within each group of kids, which will enable the coach to prepare lessons more focused on the specific level of each group; More differentiation, with coaches better able to focus on individual levels of experience and expertise; More fun for the kids, who will enjoy playing more against kids who are closer to them in expertise and/or grade level.

The LME Chess Committee and coaches worked together to define the best criteria for each group of kids, taking into account both ideal ranges for each instructional level and the actual number of LME chess club members currently at each level. Seats are limited for each skill level.  Priority will be given to children who meet the criteria for the day/time. Thereafter, priority will be first-come, first-served. During the year, the coach might suggest a better class for your child based on his ability or tournament result. You will be notified about the same and with parent’s permission, the child would be moved to the class that would be a better fit for his skill/level.

All children who participate in the LME Chess Club will receive a year-end trophy, but only children who participate in at least one Austin-area chess tournament will be eligible for a Gold, Silver or Bronze trophy. There are typically 2-4 chess tournaments in Austin each year. We will keep LME chess club members informed about Austin area chess tournaments. Chess tournaments are a great way to build kids’ excitement about chess, and the LME Chess Club encourages all club members to attend at least one chess tournament every school year. Please see the chess club webpage for more information.

The club fee covers the cost of 24 coached afternoon sessions (Fall & Spring sessions), Chess Club T-shirt, Chesskid.com gold membership, trophy and Beyond School Hours Admin.

Mathematics Pentathlon® is a national program that supports interactive problem-solving, strengthens basic math concepts and skills, aligns with STEM and National and State Mathematics Standards, stimulates creative thinking and integrates spatial, computational and logical reasoning skills.  Mathematics Pentathlon website

The LME Math Pentathlon Club meets weekly to learn five different games that build foundational math skills.  Math Pentathlon games are designed to be fun and to allow children with different strengths to shine in different games, as each game emphasizes a different type of mathematical thinking.  The season culminates in a Saturday tournament in which the kids play each of the five games they learned one time, facing different opponents from schools all over north Austin.  Tournament play is in a relaxed environment that emphasizes fun more than competition.  Tournament attendance is mandatory.  Before registering, please confirm that you and your child are available to attend the tournament for their grade level:
  – 04/07/2018  Kindergarten & 1st grade
04/21/2018  2nd & 3rd grade
– 04/28/2018  4th & 5th grade
*Parent volunteering is mandatory for this club. Please click here to go to the Math Pentathlon webpage for parent volunteering details.
The registration form includes questions about the ways in which you are available to volunteer. Please be accurate about your availability so that the group your child is placed in has enough parent volunteers to avoid canceling meetings or disbanding the team.
The club fee covers the cost of tournament registration, pizza on tournament day, a t-shirt, games and supplies that are used during club meetings and Beyond School Hours Administration.

Both of these programs are run by our parent volunteers. In order to make these programs successful, we need the committed help of the parents.
